Passport Renewal: Fees, Processing Times and the Six-Month Rule

Some links in this guide may be affiliate links. If you book through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How that works

A passport that’s valid on paper can still keep you off a flight if it expires within six months. Plan renewals around your trips, not your expiration date.

U.S. passports are handled by the State Department. Processing times change with demand, so the safest habit is to check your passport’s expiration date whenever you start planning an international trip.

Fees for adults

Service Cost
Passport book renewal $130
First-time passport book $165 ($130 application fee plus $35 acceptance fee)
Expedited service $60 extra
Faster return delivery An extra fee for 1–2 day delivery

The State Department updates its fee chart from time to time; the current version is on travel.state.gov.

How long it takes

As of 2026, routine service takes about 4 to 6 weeks and expedited service about 2 to 3 weeks. Those times don’t include mailing in either direction, which can add another week or two. Check the State Department’s processing times page before you apply, especially before summer and holiday seasons.

Renewing

  • Online: available to many adults whose previous passport was issued when they were at least 16, within the last 15 years, and who meet the other eligibility rules.
  • By mail: for eligible adults using Form DS-82, with your old passport and a new photo.
  • In person: required for first-time applicants, children under 16 and some others.

Children under 16 get passports valid for five years, and both parents or guardians generally need to consent.

The six-month rule and other entry rules

Many countries won’t let you enter, and airlines may not let you board, if your passport expires within six months of your travel dates. The Schengen area in Europe requires a passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure and issued within the past 10 years. Some countries also require blank pages for stamps.

Travel tip

Look up the entry requirements for each country on your itinerary on travel.state.gov, including countries where you only change planes, and renew early if your passport will be close to any limit.

A passport also counts as acceptable ID at airport security; see REAL ID and airport ID rules. Before you go, check the destination’s travel advisory and enroll in STEP.

  • An adult passport book renewal costs $130; a first-time adult book costs $165 including the $35 acceptance fee.
  • Routine processing takes about 4 to 6 weeks and expedited service about 2 to 3 weeks, plus mailing time.

Travelers also ask

Q: Can I renew my passport online?

A: Many adults can, if their most recent passport was issued when they were 16 or older, within the last 15 years, and they meet the other eligibility rules on travel.state.gov. Otherwise, renew by mail or apply in person.

Q: What if I need a passport in less than two weeks?

A: If you have urgent international travel within 14 days, you can make an appointment at a passport agency or center. Bring proof of travel.

Q: Is a passport card enough for international travel?

A: Only for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. You can’t use a passport card for international flights.
